Does a Marching Band Bass Drum Make A Good Kick Drum?

stevieb

Just another guy, really.
I know it's been done, but I have never been up close and personal with the results- what kind of kick drum for a drum kit do you get if you convert a marching bass drum of around 26 X 14, to kick drum use? Very cool, merely usable, or total junk- or somewhere in between?

Thanks.

Bonham and Moon used big but shallow kicks - like a 26x14 - so I'm sure it would be fine. Just use a hoop that you could mount a pedal on to.

I don't know the history of the modern era drum kit, but I'd guess that early kick drums were probably based on, if not actual, marching band bass drums.

As long as you don't use the marching heads and tuning style, should be fine.

What Greg said.....actually all the drummers up until the late 70's used 14" deep bass drums, just of varying sizes.

Yeah I think that's correct. If I'm not mistaken, Ludwig made the first kit, and used a kick drum similar to the marching band bass drum.
