What is the best way to record a drum set? How many mics are required for the best sound? What kind of mics are best? How close should the mic be to each drum?

+1!
That's a great guide right there.

There's no best way, or best sound, or best mic, but the guide will help you figure out what's going to work for you. :)

+2 Last but not least-drums are A: a kit, and B: conversely as individual as voice or most any instrument , which means small differences in placement of mics, the inherent differences in each part of a signal chain from mic, to cable, to preamp, to compressor, to interface , etc add up to the fact that it takes time and practice to get the drum sound you want. All the information in the world will only get you started, repeated practice is how you get good. And sometimes pure luck will give you gold.

Yeah +1 to that. Trial and error. Experiment. Become a mad scientist. Try new things. Try tuning drums in new ways, especially your snare drum. Try the 1 loose lug method. Try different heads and different mics, etc.
